Warning Signs Your Pittsburgh Roof Needs Attention

Your roof doesn't come with a dashboard warning light. But it does send signals — if you know what to look for.

Here are 7 signs Pittsburgh homeowners shouldn't ignore:

1. Shingles that are curling or buckling. Shingles that cup at the edges or buckle in the middle are past their prime. This is one of the clearest signs a roof is approaching end of life.

2. Granules in your gutters. Those small, sand-like granules in your gutters aren't dirt — they're the protective coating coming off your shingles. Some shedding is normal on new roofs, but heavy granule loss on an older roof means the shingles are breaking down.

3. Dark streaks or moss growth. Dark streaking is usually algae. Moss is worse — it holds moisture against the shingles and accelerates deterioration. Both are worth addressing before they cause real damage.

4. Sagging areas. A roof that sags in any area — even slightly — suggests structural issues underneath. This one warrants an immediate inspection.

5. Daylight in your attic. If you can see light coming through your roof boards from inside your attic, water can get in just as easily.

6. Flashing that's cracked or pulling away. Flashing seals the joints around chimneys, vents, and skylights. When it fails, those areas become the first place water gets in.

7. Your roof is over 20 years old and has never been inspected. Age alone isn't a death sentence, but an un-inspected 20+ year old roof is an unknown risk. It's worth knowing what you're dealing with.
